When you feel any type of pain or discomfort in your body, what is usually the first thing that runs through your mind? Getting rid of it of course, and if you are like most people that involves taking some type of pain reliever with the hopes of quickly subduing the unpleasant sensation. If the pain is chronic, however, you may have noticed that you are not just taking one capsule anymore. As time passed, you find yourself needing two, or switching over to the extra-strength brand in order to take care of your pain completely.

What you are experiencing is your body developing a tolerance to certain chemicals that create the end result you’re looking for, which in this case would be pain relief. Besides the list of negative side effects that come from consistently taking Ibuprofen and over-the-counter NSAID’s for pain management, these treatment options have been shown to act as a temporary Band-Aid for easing the symptoms of underlying issues, eventually doing more harm than good if the user isn’t aware.

While we have gone over the benefits of CBD in other articles (check out CBD in Depth if you haven’t already), today we will be looking at if the body develops a tolerance to Cannabidiol like it does with other compounds. Let’s get into it!

CBD Tolerance: What Do The Studies Say?

While research in CBD is ongoing, at this point in time a tolerance for CBD has not been observed. According to a 2011 study “Safety and Side Effects of Cannabidiol, a Cannabis sativa Constituent” done by the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Riberião Preto, in the University of São Paulo, Brazil:
“In human studies, CBD administration did not induce side effects across a wide range of dosages, including acute and chronic dose regimens, and tolerance for CBD did not develop.”

A recent 2017 study “An Update on Safety and Side Effects of Cannabidiol”, which aims to expand upon the comprehensive survey and review of 132 original studies performed by Bergamaschi et al. on CBD safety and side effects, states that:

“…psychological and psychomotor functions are not adversely affected. The same holds true for gastrointestinal transit, food intake, and absence of toxicity for nontransformed cells. Chronic use and high doses of up to 1500mg per day have been repeatedly shown to be well tolerated by humans

It also goes on to say:

“Bergamaschi et al. list an impressive number of acute and chronic studies in humans, showing CBD safety for a wide array of side effects. They also conclude from their survey, that none of the studies reported tolerance to CBD.”
The findings from studies seem to be pretty clear on how the body does not create CBD and Self-Awareness a tolerance to CBD, but that does not always seem to be the case when looking at anecdotal testimonials from those who use CBD on a consistent basis.

CBD Tolerance and Consumer Feedback

There seems to be a discrepancy between consumers who experience an increase in tolerance and those who don’t when taking CBD for long periods of time. Here are some anecdotal testimonies found on the web:

“I used CBD daily for about a month (25-50mg) and started getting noticeable tolerance”
“After 4 years of usage for stomach cramps and anxiety, I used 2x the amount that I started with. Definitely a tolerance has built, but nothing like any other drug”
“If anything, I’ve become more sensitive to it over the years. I take less now than ever before”

This can be explained by just remembering that everyone has a unique biochemical fingerprint that reacts differently to all sorts of chemicals and compounds. We aren’t all allergic to peanuts and dogs, right? Just as the dose that works for you won’t always work the same for your friend, you could have experience slight tolerance build up in prolonged while someone else doesn’t. Being aware of and understanding how your body reacts to CBD can greatly benefit your experience with it and potentially make your wallet happier in the long run though, as you can switch things up if needed.

CBD and Self-Awareness

If you feel you are experiencing a slight tolerance to the CBD dosage you have been using, taking 24-48 hours off of it to restart your system may do the trick to get you feeling right again. If you feel great at the same level months into using it, then keep doing what you’re doing! And finally, you may feel that you get the same or even better results lowering the dosage after your initial doses and playing around with it a bit, then keep it there for a while and see how that goes for you. Lengthening the life span of your products if able is never a bad thing!
