What do UFC fighter Nate Diaz, NFL star Marvin Washington, surfer Mason Ho, triathlon athlete Andrew Talansky and competitive climber Lisa Chulich have in common? They are all advocates of CBD.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a natural compound derived from the hemp plant. It has been shown to help treat a long list of ailments including inflammation, deep muscle and joint pain, mood disorders, sleep disorders, etc. Because of its positive health benefits, athletes of every shape and size have begun turning to CBD to sooth their sore bodies, overcome injuries and help them train.
CBD products are great for those who push their bodies to the limit and want a safe, natural remedy for aches and pains. Don’t just take our word for it though – here is a short rundown of what CBD is, what it can do and which top athletes are swearing by it in 2019.
Why is CBD Such a Big Deal?
Cannabidol – or CBD – is a natural compound produced by the cannabis plant hemp. When ingested it interacts with several important systems in the body to provide a plethora of healing effects.
Despite popular misconceptions, even though they are a close cousin to marijuana plants, hemp plants are not illegal. This is because hemp only produces trace amounts of THC – the compound in marijuana that causes a “high” feeling. Without this compound, those who use hemp products can enjoy all of the great health benefits of CBD without having to worry about any uncomfortable side effects.
Studies have shown that CBD can:
- Reduce levels of anxiety
- Act as an anti-oxidant,
- Reduce inflammation,
- Act as a muscle relaxant,
- Reduce nausea and vomiting,
- Regulate the immune system,
- Promote bone growth,
- And act as an antibacterial agent
The list goes on, but just these few effects make it obvious why so many professional athletes are turning to CBD for their health needs.

Who Is Using CBD?
As we mentioned before, there are a lot of big names out there who are not only using CBD – but advocating for it as well.
One of the first big advocates for CBD was UFC star Nate Diaz. After famously smoking CBD during a post-fight press conference in 2016, people began talking about what CBD can do for athletes, and whether professionals should be allowed to use the substance. Diaz said in one interview that he gives himself credit for USADA lifting its ban on the substance in early 2018.
Like UFC and MMA fighters, professional football players also have to deal with their fair share of injuries. Unfortunately, many professional football players experience debilitating concussions during their careers which often lead to serious problems later in life.
NFL stars Marvin Washington and Leonard Marshall are both public advocates for the use of CBD products among athletes. They argue that CBD is a safer, more effective and more natural alternative to prescription pain medications.
In this interview, Washington stated, “CBD is a great alternative to opioids and pharmaceuticals that players have been poisoned with.”
Marshall has also expressed his concern with the number of athletes who are turning to prescription pain medications.
“I’m gonna change the way athletes look at supplemental care versus prescription drugs. I’m gonna help save a bunch of lives. Opioids kill people – a plant doesn’t,” Marshall said in this interview.
It isn’t just athletes who are tackled and punched on a regular basis who find relief in CBD. Many athletes who compete in extreme sports such as triathlons, climbing and mountain biking have also discovered CBD’s regenerative properties.
Professional climber Lisa Chulich has spent a lot of time writing on her blog about the dangers of prescription and over-the-counter pain medications. She points out that these medications can often increase the risk of heart attack and can slow down the body’s natural healing process. She uses these facts to build up to her support of CBD products (such as salves) as great alternatives to these types of medications.
“As a climber, I use the salve on my finger joints/tendons after brutal days climbing and finger training to reduce some of the stress there without sending any anti-inflammatory signals to my entire body. I also used daily on my recent mcl tear to help reduce pain at night and inflammation,” she stated in her blog.
Now that CBD is becoming more accepted, many athletes are taking on sponsorships from big CBD brands such as UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway who is sponsored by Pure Spectrum.
Other important athletes who use CBD include:
- NFL retiree Terrell Davis
- Competitive surfer Mason Ho
- Triathlon athlete Andrew Talansky
- UFC fighter Gina Mazany
- Mountain biker Teal Stetson-Lee
- Olympic medalist Devin Logan
- and former NBA star Lamar Odom
Art: Have another piece of art here. Since I quoted Chulich pretty extensively, try to include a photo of someone rock climbing or bouldering. Include the text, “CBD can help with recovery, reduce inflammation, sooth muscle and joint pain, relax the body and so much more.”
I Want to Try CBD! Where Do I Start?
There are countless CBD products out there to choose from. From gummies to tinctures to vapes, there is something out there for just about anyone.
For those wanting fast, full-body relief, a CBD vape product may be the perfect solution. Vaping is widely considered to be the most effective way to ingest CBD. When vaped, CBD is absorbed directly into the blood stream through the lungs – meaning it can start working in minutes or even seconds. The brand Pure Spectrum offers a variety of vape options including tangerine, lemon haze and bubblegum flavors.
If vaping isn’t your style, taking a CBD via tincture is the next best thing. Tinctures can be taken by putting a small amount of liquid beneath the tongue before swallowing. This allows the CBD to be absorbed through a thin membrane in the mouth. Tinctures can also be added to soups, teas and coffee. For an all-natural tincture, try KOI Naturals’ spearmint or orange-flavored blends.
For athletes who suffer from regular muscle and joint pain, a CBD salve or lotion might be the best option. These creams can be applied directly to area of discomfort for long lasting, targeted relief. Pure Spectrum also offers a variety of salves and creams – each designed to provide unique, lasting relief.
